Art Display

At our last house I had a “clothes line” art display where I could peg my sons art work.

Cheap & simple

In the “new” house I’ve been holding off on any kitchen displays as I wanted to wait till the wood-veneer panelled walls were painted.

Well… They’re painted white(ish) and the kitchen has black and red accents so I felt it was time to work on the display

Make a mess…

I found a large, cheap, poster frame; wooden craft letters to spell ART and paint in black, white & red (thanks Walmart) I handed all of the above to my 6 yr old and told him to make a mess…. This is the result

The finished display

Usually he brings home larger drawings from school so the frame is massive for this little one, but I like it 🙂 (He drew “Anger” from the Pixar Movie “Inside Out”)

TastyKakeMinis: The Mini ‘Kakes’ that are….

…Awesome! (and Tasty of course)

A while ago I signed up to Influenster.com to receive their VoxBox -which is basically a box they send you (every now and then) of a new item or product to test and review.

The main point of it is to get people to test it and to also have them share their opinions on social media and basically spread the word about a new product. The more opinions they share and tasks they complete… The more points, potential prizes and a bigger chance they have of receiving a vox box in the future.

The contents of my VoxBox

The contents of my VoxBox

Sometimes a requirement is to blog about the product that you’re testing and as I do have a blog I will do that from time to time. At this point I must state that I was sent this product (for free) for the sake of testing and reviewing; these are my own opinions. (Oh and if I don’t like the product I will be brutally honest about it)

So…in this VoxBox I received Tastykake minis to test (yum!) Apparently you can get one of three flavours, those being coffee, chocolate or Reese’s peanut butter. I had a peanut butter flavour (yay!) which, honestly, would be my first choice of the three anyway

The theme of the VoxBox was celebrating so the VoxBox came with a whole box of TastyKake Minis, a drink cosi, party hat and some money off vouchers to share with friends (I shared with my husband and son because that way I know I’ll be getting at least one ‘kake’ in return and I’ll really have a reason to celebrate * insert evil laugh mwahahahah * ).

Celebrating Solo

Celebrating Solo

Tasks involved sharing how we celebrated with TastyKate Minis, using the hashtag #tastykakeminiwins on social media platforms of course. Luckily for me, that week I had just started my new job so I had a genuine reason to celebrate … not only having a job but also celebrating the coffee breaks and the chance to put my feet up after a day at work 🙂

So now the product itself- TastyKake Minis are small sponge cakes – in this case chocolate, with peanut butter flavoured icing and peanut butter flavoured crème filling. They come in wrapped packets of 3 – which has a little cardboard tray at the bottom to help avoid squishing 😉 The cakes are very sweet but small enough to not feel guilty about it. They have the perfect amount of crème and icing to balance out the chocolate sponge – which is moist and springy. I feel 3 cakes per pack is just the right amount, 4 would be too many and 2 wouldn’t be as devilishly satisfying. Overall they were a hit – a big thumbs up from me, my husband and my son (seriously I had to hide them to make sure they weren’t all inhaled in one go)

I can see this being a regular thing...(need more wine though)

I can see this being a regular thing…(need more wine though)

Each Box has 24 mini cupcakes (so 8 packets per box) which is a good amount … but odd enough to make you have to buy more than one box every fortnight if you’re using them for lunch-boxes and snacks (sneaky but it works). The box itself is bright, secure and opens in such a way that you can store it in your pantry and still access the TastyKakes without having to take the whole box out each time, which, as a mum and maker of lunches, is a definite plus.

I had never heard of or noticed the brand TastyKake before this VoxBox (maybe if I had grown up in the States it would be a different story) but honestly since testing them I have seen their brand everywhere so this VoxBox thing works as far as spreading the word and sending out those subliminal messages 😉

There are MORE of them!

There are MORE of them!

I would definitely recommend TastyKakes, they have been added to our shopping list and I’m sure they will be a regular purchase from now on. I enjoyed this VoxBox and look forward to the next one 🙂 Have you tried these yet? Are you a TastyKake fan?

Maybe it runs in the family….

I have a few posts in the pipeline but many are being written in real-time (usually part way through an awful a challenging DIY project) so I will wait to see how they pan out or at least edit them a bit better  before posting. In the meantime I wanted to share my little mans latest Artwork.

I have mentioned before that he wants a Spiderman themed bedroom. Well with the exception of any major changes like the colour of the walls its beginning to take shape with the help of some blue and red items (such as his Spiderman-blue book crate I painted here), some shelves and bedding etc. I have a few more tweaks, including a huge canvas but eager to get going he wanted to make one of his own.

so here it is….

SpiderMan

SpiderMan

I love it 🙂 You can tell what it is and everything -or I can anyway. I gave him free reign on this – which given my worrying controlling  picky nature was a big step forward for me and I’m so proud of him. He’s reminded me that he doesn’t need me to hover over him and help all the time and that hes more than capable of making something beautiful unaided.

Speaking of which…. we received a letter from his school informing us that one of his art pieces had been chosen to represent the school and be displayed at the local “mall” (VERY PROUD MUM ALERT)

Here he is with his art 🙂 Can you tell what it is?

Whoop Whoop!

A.E.I.Love U! Decoupage Letters ( <— Check ME out)

My sister in-law is expecting (yay) and asked me to make (or rather decorate) some wooden letters for his nursery – and some for her step daughter while I’m at it. She sent some photos to give me an idea of what kind of lettering/decoration she would like, along with photos of their bedding sets and colour schemes. Grey, green and a dash of bright blue for him – and purple, white with lovehearts & stripes for her.

*Deep breath * Let's do this

*Deep breath * Let’s do this

With the amount of pattern involved I knew just painting them wasn’t going to work so I decided to try decoupage, i.e. coloured papers glued onto pre-cut wooden letters (Yup this is where the Modge Podge experimenting started)

I set off to get materials such as letters, coordinating paint, papers & ribbons. The assistant at the craft store was very helpful, she gave me a few tips such as letting each layer dry before adding more and investing in a craft knife & sponge brushes – not just an up-selling ploy by the way.

I started with her Step-Daughters letters “KYA” – the babys name is a secret so I will just show you one or 2 of his letters in case this massively popular blog post gets leaked to the media * rolls eyes *

I decided to paint the wood first to avoid dripping on the paper when painting the back and sides – and also in case the paper didn’t cover 100% of the front. For Kya I went for a purple. Once dry, I drew around each letter, cut them out carefully and whipped out the ModgePodge. The assistant was right, a thin coat first, place the paper and wait for it to dry. THEN another coat to seal it, add any other papers or ribbons on top….let it dry….top coat…let it dry.

The hardest part was trimming the edges, it took some trial and error but I eventually figured out how to trim any overhang without tearing the paper (yup you wait till its dry and rubbery) There were a few slips but a dab of paint covered any mishaps and overall it seemed to work out well.

Taa Daa :)

Taa Daa 🙂

His letters were done even quicker and I’m really happy with them. My sister-in-law has seen Kyas but babys is a surprise, she doesn’t know I’ve started them yet, let alone finished, packed and posted them 🙂 I’m excited for her to get them, fingers crossed she loves them.

I love them more each time I look at them, at first I was stressing about a few minute imperfections but I need to remind myself that the things I make aren’t going to be perfect, the edges aren’t going to be completely flush every time because I’m human. This is work done by hand, not printed by a machine and mass produced…they’re unique and made by me, with love.

As always below is an album of the process and some other shots of the finished letters

What’s in a name?

sophie
Sophie means Wisdom

The meaning of Sophie is “wisdom” – try and keep the howls of laughter to a minimum please. Anyone who knows me will agree that this is NOT the best word to describe me, in fact classy and demure would suit me better – and THAT’S saying something…

But I guess it depends on what we think of when we hear the word “wisdom”.

flashback

I’m the one on the left….

Back in school my maths teacher would joke about the meaning of my name in relation to my ability (or inability) to recite the times tables or do long division; some of my friends would give me THAT pat on the shoulder or head whenever I pulled another “soph-esque” face palm moment and I had plenty of dumb blonde jokes thanks to my original hair colour (yes I WAS a natural blonde)

Of course all of the above was said and done in jest, many were friends whom knew me well enough to know I could easily shrug it off and laugh at myself when I did something silly… But when you hear something enough it kind of becomes part of normality, you almost buy into the jokes and for me, without meaning to, it became negative. Somewhere down the line people thought it was ok to say to me how they thought I “played up” my stupidity but the truth is I’m NOT THAT CLEVER. My geography sucks big time, history and politics makes me glaze over and currently my knowledge of any world events is courtesy of my Facebook or Twitter feeds but that’s not wisdom is it? That’s knowledge and you know what? It just doesn’t interest me, I know it should, I try to stay informed but no matter how much crap that’s thrown at me it refuses to stick.

wisdom

Wisdom

Looking back it seems I clung to the negativity and completely misinterpreted what my name really meant. Wisdom isn’t all about knowing the facts, even if it was I still came out with GCSEs, A-Levels and a BAHons (albeit in fashion – again stop laughing lol) but it’s is more about experience, common sense and good judgement. And really it seems – at least to others- that that was me all over. My friends were only allowed to go to school parties if I was going because if I was there it meant there was “at least one responsible one” (don’t ask where their parents got this idea from lol) I was the younger but more “down to earth”, “logical” and “level headed” sister who wound up her older one because my curfew was later regardless of the 5yr age gap; I’ve been told to consider becoming a policewoman due to my perceptiveness and rationale, or a counsellor thanks to my understanding and insight….

And then I go and throw a spanner in the works by getting pregnant whilst in the early stages of “dating” someone (if you can call it that) or I marry someone after “knowing” them for 6 short months… Or I “drag my son away from his dad” to live in another country with my new husband…. And all of those things are crazy! … But I did them, and my friends and family supported me… Because guess what? Because they know me, they know my situation and they know I have it covered.

They know I would have considered every outcome, they trust that I have thought things through… That I’ve done my homework, that I’ve got options and fall back plans… And they’re right! It’s not because I’m a pessimist, it’s because I have learned from my past experience. I have learnt that things don’t always go to plan, that curveballs are thrown and you just have to take them as they come; I’ve learned that even after years of “knowing someone” they can still break your heart or shock you in ways you never dreamed of… That life is short, that it’s better to have taken a leap of faith than to ALWAYS wonder “what if” when it’s too late.

Babies, marriage, international moves… They’re all kind of a big deal and yet for me all three of them happened unexpectedly. All three threw me completely but I took them in my stride and welcomed their life lessons. Of course I’m not claiming to be overflowing with wisdom – though I wouldn’t blame you for thinking that after reading my recent guest post on the subject ;)… but in reality I still have a LOT to learn. What I do know is that I’m much stronger than I thought I was; I’m adaptable and less “set in my ways” than I used to think, I’m open minded, understanding and I trust myself…but most of all I have learned that I’m NOT stupid… Just don’t make me take a test to prove that 😉

Getty up time

It’s light outside….

The day is here…

That means….

GETTY UP TIME! Yes!!!

I’m so excited to jump in bed with mummy, she’s always so warm to cuddle up to. I hope ‘he’s’ at work this morning so I can have her all to myself. I mean, I like him, he’s OK – and he does play tickle fights with me -which is fun- but when he’s here that means I have to share her and that’s not so fun.

I’d better grab my blankey too, another favourite of mine. Blankey + mummy = best cuddles ever! If she let me play on her iPhone a while that would make it even better!

red apple

Shiniest apple ever

I wish she would just wake up and make me breakfast the FIRST time I ask her instead of saying ‘in a minute, just one more minute’…but then if she’s really tired I can always get a yummy apple and sit up in her bed playing a little longer. I like it when that happens – I feel like a big boy and mummy seems happier when I wake her up gently rather than shouting in her face and jumping on her. Maybe if she went to sleep at bedtime she wouldn’t be so tired. She says she stays up because she likes some ‘mummy-time’ once I’m asleep. Apparently that means time by herself but I don’t understand because I let her have a bath by herself the other day and I only splashed her and pointed and laughed at her belly a few times. I even left loads of my toys in there for her to play with so I don’t see why that isn’t enough for her.

trash packs

So many Trash-Packs

I wouldn’t like ‘me time’. I like being with her ALL the time. The best thing is when I show her all my trash-pack toys and she tells me their names. We counted them before and I have more than 170 now. They don’t do anything but they’re bright colours and I still don’t have all of them so I’ll probably get some when we go to the shop again. Sometimes mummy says we won’t get any toys before we’ve even left the house – how unfair!– but then if I moan about it enough while she’s trying to find all her boring ‘good food’ I usually end up with SOMETHING for me in the trolley – even if it’s just sweets or something.

Why can’t I eat sweets and crisps all day anyway? She says it’s not good for me but they taste a lot better than these stupid veggies that she wants me to eat. She says they will help me see in the dark and stuff, or that they will make me big and strong but really she’s just tricking me because EVERYONE knows that the only way to get super powers is to get bitten by a spider or to drink bright green magic stuff or something. Anyway, she eats her veggies and she isn’t big or strong. She always tells me not to jump on her because he arms aren’t working… or her knee…or her fingers. I think she’s tricking me again because it’s always something different. She says she’s poorly but mummys don’t get sick. If she was sick she would stay in bed while her mummy came and looked after her- because that’s what happens when you’re not feeling well but not her, she gets up and moves around all day so I think she’s pretending. Silly mummy.

I think I’ll go and get another apple in a minute and then it’s REALLY getty up time.
